Compared with plain bearings, rolling bearings have the following advantages:

1. The rolling bearing has realized generalization, serialization and standardization, which is more suitable for mass production and supply, and is very convenient for use and maintenance;
2. The friction coefficient of rolling bearing is smaller than that of sliding bearing, and the transmission efficiency is higher. The friction coefficient of sliding bearing is generally 0.08-0.12, while that of rolling bearing is only 0.001-0.005;
3. The rolling bearing has high operation accuracy, small internal clearance and high machining accuracy of all parts. The rolling bearing can also increase the rigidity of the bearing by preloading. This is very important for precision machinery;
4. Rolling bearings not only have high mechanical properties and long service life, but also can save the expensive non-ferrous metals for manufacturing sliding bearings by using bearing steel and heat treatment;
5. The rolling bearing has high transmission efficiency and low heating capacity, which can reduce the consumption of lubricating oil and facilitate lubrication maintenance;
6. Some rolling bearings can bear axial load and radial load at the same time, which is conducive to simplifying the structure of bearing support;
7. Rolling bearings can be conveniently applied to shafts in any direction in space.
Compared with plain bearings, rolling bearings also have the following disadvantages:
1. The load bearing capacity of rolling bearing is smaller than that of sliding bearing with the same volume. Therefore, the radial dimension of rolling bearing is large. Sliding bearings are often used in occasions requiring large load, small radial size and compact structure (such as internal combustion engine crankshaft bearings);
2. Rolling bearing has large vibration and noise, especially in the later stage of use. Therefore, sliding bearing is generally preferred when there are high requirements for precision and no vibration;
3. Once foreign matters enter the rolling bearing, intermittent large vibration and noise will be generated, and early damage will also be caused. In addition, rolling bearings are also prone to early damage due to metal clip impurities. Even if there is no early damage, the service life of rolling bearings will be reduced to a certain extent. In short, the service life of rolling bearings is shorter than that of sliding bearings.
Rolling bearing and sliding bearing have their own advantages and disadvantages, and each has a certain application. They can not completely replace each other and develop in a certain direction. At present, rolling bearing has developed into the main support type of machinery and is more and more widely used.
